The Sustainable City Charter

A Collective Step Toward a Greener Westminster

The Sustainable City Charter is a forward-thinking, business-led initiative designed to combat the environmental challenges posed by non-domestic buildings in Westminster. As a collaborative effort between the Westminster Property Association and Westminster City Council, the Charter aims to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city, where non-domestic buildings contribute to 71% of Westminster’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Who is it for?

The Charter is tailored for organisations which own or occupy property in Westminster who are committed to sustainability and reducing their environmental impact. By signing up, they join a growing network of organisations focused on driving down emissions, sharing knowledge, and working together for a greener city.

Why sign up?

Becoming a signatory offers several benefits, including:

  • Demonstrating commitment to climate action: Showcase your dedication to sustainability at both the local and national levels.
  • Exclusive access: Gain entry to exclusive events, tools, and knowledge-sharing opportunities within the Charter network.
  • Discounts on recycling services: Receive a 10% discount on recycling services through Westminster City Council’s Commercial Waste Service.
  • Professional networking: Build contacts and learn from other businesses facing similar sustainability challenges.
  • Collaboration opportunities: Engage with other stakeholders in your buildings, such as landowners and tenants, to work together toward net-zero goals.
How does it work?

The Sustainable City Charter is free to join, and there is a team available to support organisations with the application process.

To join the Charter, businesses need to:

  • Submit a short and simple application, outlining their plans to address the Charter’s key commitments, which include actions like reducing energy consumption, introducing sustainable procurement policies, and auditing buildings for emissions reduction. Organisations are welcome to submit existing plans.
  • Commit to annual reporting on energy consumption and provide updates on their progress.

By joining the Charter, businesses take an active role in shaping a sustainable future for Westminster, and collaborate with other local businesses on their sustainability journey. Together, we can make a significant impact in creating a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable city for all.
